Pediatric Headaches

Many children suffer from pediatric headaches. These headaches can have a number of causes. In chiropractic, we think of these causes as the 3 T's which include trauma's, toxin's, and thoughts.

Trauma's can be a difficult labor. Many children born through cesarean sections or forceps or suction delivery can have misalignments of the upper spine or cranial bones which can lead to headaches and symptoms later on in life. Other types of traumas include slips and falls so it's important that as a Pediatric Chiropractor we take a careful history to see if there has been any incidence of slips and falls. They say children can fall up to 2,000-3,000x up to the age of 3. Imagine if we were to do that at an older age we would have a lot of problems and potentially those types of traumas could kill us. Fortunately kids have an ability to adapt to these traumas but sometimes they can't and it causes them to have misalignments or subluxations in the spine and cranium.

Toxins are either environment or outside toxins or internal or inside toxins. We live in a very toxic time studies have shown the incidence of many birth defects due to toxins in our environment. Unfortunately we cannot avoid all toxic environments, but we can take precautions to avoid contamination with toxins. Personal hygiene is one of the best ways that we can limit exposure to environmental toxins. Children due to their small size are like antennas when it comes to environmental toxins. They can many times sense things before we can as adults. When they sense these toxins many times the first thing to develop is headaches. Internal toxins are the foods that we eat. We know that many foods create an allergic or sensitivity response in the body and can lead to symptoms like headaches.

Thoughts can also lead to pediatric headaches. When we are children our mind gets full of so many thoughts and it can become overwhelmed. The mind of a child is developing and it's a critical time of development of not only critical thinking skills but emotional responses. Strong emotions are sometimes difficult for children to express and when they hold those things in it can lead to pediatric headaches.

I hope this article was able to educate you a little more on how we as chiropractor's view pediatric headaches. We look at the three T's: traumas, toxins, and thoughts. Through looking at those can we get a view of how to address our care to heal the body from above down inside and out.
