ADHD & Pediatric Chiropractic Care | San Antonio TX

ADHD has roots in nervous system dysregulation and sympathetic dominance. Learn how cranial chiropractic improves vagal tone, sleep, and focus in children with ADHD.

ADHD & Pediatric Chiropractic Care | San Antonio TX

Your child has been diagnosed with ADHD. You are trying medication, behavioral therapy, or both. But you wonder if there is something structural — something about their nervous system's baseline state — that is making focus harder.

You are onto something. In 23 years of pediatric chiropractic practice using Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT) and SOT Craniopathy, I have seen how much nervous system regulation improves focus, impulse control, and sleep in ADHD children. Chiropractic is not a cure for ADHD. But it can reduce the neurological noise that makes ADHD harder.

What Is Actually Happening in ADHD?

Most explanations of ADHD focus on dopamine and the prefrontal cortex. That is accurate at the neurochemical level. But there is a deeper layer: the baseline state of the nervous system.

Children with ADHD tend to have:

  • High sympathetic tone (fight-or-flight dominance) even at rest
  • Low vagal tone (weak parasympathetic/calm system)
  • Sleep dysregulation (hard to fall asleep, early waking, poor sleep quality)
  • Sensory hyperawareness (responding to stimuli that other kids filter out)
  • Emotional dysregulation (difficulty calming down when upset)

This is not laziness or willfulness. It is a nervous system that is chronically in threat-detection mode.

When a child is stuck in sympathetic dominance, the prefrontal cortex (responsible for impulse control and focus) has less available blood flow and metabolic energy. That is why ADHD kids have trouble focusing — not because they cannot, but because their nervous system is in a state that makes sustained attention harder.

The Cranial-Vagal Connection in ADHD

The vagus nerve (cranial nerve X) is the on/off switch for parasympathetic tone. It runs from the brainstem down through the neck, heart, lungs, and digestive system. A healthy vagus nerve allows the child to:

  • Shift from sympathetic (alert) to parasympathetic (calm) easily
  • Focus for sustained periods
  • Fall asleep and stay asleep
  • Regulate emotions
  • Digest food and manage bowel function

When the vagus nerve is compressed or irritated by cranial misalignment, it cannot signal parasympathetic tone properly. The child stays in sympathetic dominance — hyper-focused on external threats, unable to focus on homework, unable to sleep.

Why Cranial Alignment Matters for ADHD

The vagus nerve exits the brainstem at the occipital bone and passes through several cranial landmarks:

  • Sphenobasilar joint controls brainstem output
  • Occipital bone anchors the vagal exit
  • Temporal bones affect hear and inner ear function
  • C1-C3 vertebrae support the brainstem and vagus passage

When these structures are misaligned — from birth trauma, falls, postural strain, or developmental stress — they create mechanical compression on the vagus nerve. The result is a child locked in sympathetic dominance.

How Cranial Chiropractic Helps ADHD

My approach focuses on restoring vagal tone and brainstem function:

1. Cranial assessment. I palpate the sphenobasilar joint, occipital bone, temporal bones, and cervical spine to identify restrictions. Most ADHD children I assess have sphenobasilar dysfunction, occipital tension, or upper cervical subluxation.

2. Gentle cranial corrections. Using SOT blocks and light mobilization, I restore proper sphenobasilar motion and brainstem function. This immediately improves vagal tone.

3. Occipital release. Releasing occipital restriction reduces brainstem irritation and improves vagal signaling.

4. Cervical alignment. Correcting C1-C3 misalignments improves blood flow to the brainstem and vagal passage.

5. Sleep optimization. As vagal tone improves, sleep often improves dramatically — sometimes within days.

What Parents Notice

Parents typically report within 4-8 weeks:

  • Better sleep: Child falls asleep more easily, sleeps more deeply, wakes less
  • Calmer baseline: Less hyperactivity, less explosive outbursts
  • Better focus: Homework becomes less of a battle; attention span lengthens
  • Less impulsivity: Child thinks before acting more often
  • Better mood: Overall emotional state is lighter and more regulated
  • Better appetite and digestion: Parasympathetic tone improves all gut function

These are not behavior changes — these are nervous system state changes. The child's prefrontal cortex finally has better access to the metabolic resources it needs for impulse control and focus.

ADHD, Sleep, and the Vagus Nerve

Sleep is critical for ADHD. When a child does not sleep well, ADHD symptoms worsen dramatically. Conversely, when sleep improves, ADHD behaviors often improve 20-30% before any other interventions take effect.

The vagus nerve controls sleep onset and sleep depth through its connection to the pineal gland and circadian rhythm centers. When vagal tone is poor, sleep is difficult. When we improve vagal tone through cranial work, sleep often improves immediately.

How Chiropractic Complements ADHD Treatment

Chiropractic is not a replacement for medication, behavioral therapy, or other medical management. Instead, it works alongside them:

  • Medication: Cranial chiropractic does not interfere with ADHD medication. In fact, with improved sleep and better vagal tone, some children may need lower doses.
  • Behavioral therapy: As the nervous system shifts toward calm, behavioral strategies become more effective — the child can actually apply what they are learning.
  • School interventions: With better focus and sleep, school performance often improves naturally.

Is It Safe?

Yes. The adjustments are gentle, and there are no side effects. Many families do chiropractic and other therapies simultaneously — they support each other.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can chiropractic replace ADHD medication? A: Not in most cases. Chiropractic optimizes the nervous system and improves sleep and focus. Some children may eventually need lower doses, but that is a conversation between you and your pediatrician.

Q: How long before I see changes? A: Sleep often improves within 1-3 visits. Focus and impulse control typically improve within 4-8 weeks. Baseline calm can take 8-12 weeks to fully establish.

Q: Should I stop behavioral therapy? A: No. Behavioral therapy teaches skills. Chiropractic improves the nervous system state so the child can learn and apply those skills better. Both matter.

Q: What if my child is already on medication? A: Chiropractic works alongside medication. There are no interactions. As sleep and focus improve, work with your pediatrician if you want to reassess medication needs.

Q: Can you tell in the first visit if chiropractic will help? A: Often yes. During the first assessment, I evaluate cranial function and brainstem state. If I find significant sphenobasilar or occipital dysfunction contributing to sympathetic dominance, I can usually predict good results.

Q: My child is sensory-defensive. Can they still be adjusted? A: Yes. The adjustments are so gentle that many sensory-defensive ADHD kids tolerate them well. We adapt based on what the child needs.

The Pura Vida Approach

We see ADHD not as a brain disorder alone, but as a nervous system that is locked in the wrong state. When we restore proper vagal tone, when sleep improves, when the brainstem has better blood flow — the child's own neurology works better.

Twenty-three years of working with ADHD children has taught me that small mechanical optimizations create meaningful improvements in focus, sleep, and emotional regulation.
