Building a Resilient Immune System: A Chiropractic Approach for Kids | San Antonio TX

Chronic illness in children is at historic highs. Dr. Dan Foss explains how SOT and CMRT chiropractic care build immune resilience by restoring autonomic nervous system balance — the foundation of immune health.

Building a Resilient Immune System: A Chiropractic Approach for Kids | San Antonio TX

If you grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, you probably remember a different childhood than what today's kids are experiencing. Kids played outside. Infections came and went. Chronic illness — allergies, asthma, eczema, autoimmune conditions — was rare. That was the normal baseline.

Today, that baseline has shifted. Chronic illness in children is at historic highs. Allergies now affect 1 in 10 kids. Asthma is climbing. Ear infections are so common that tubes in ears feel routine. Autoimmune conditions are emerging in children younger than ever.

The standard medical response is reactive: Your child has an ear infection? Here is an antibiotic. Your child has eczema? Here is a steroid cream. The focus is on treating each problem as it surfaces. But what if we approached it differently? What if, instead of asking "How do I treat this infection?", we asked "How do I build a child's immune system so they are not vulnerable to infections in the first place?"

In 23 years of chiropractic practice, I have seen the power of this approach. Chiropractic care — particularly SOT (Sacro-Occipital Technique) and CMRT (Chiropractic Manipulative Reflex Technique) — can restore the nervous-system balance that immune health depends on. Today, I want to explain the science, the mechanisms, and what immune-support chiropractic care looks like in practice.

The Scope of Pediatric Chronic Illness

The data is sobering:

  • Allergies affect 50 million Americans per year; in children, prevalence has risen 18% in the past two decades
  • Asthma affects 6 million children in the US
  • Ear infections are the most common reason for pediatric antibiotic use
  • Autoimmune diseases are rising in children — celiac, Type 1 diabetes, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
  • Eczema affects 10–20% of children
  • Anxiety and depression in children have doubled since 2009

This is not a matter of kids being "weaker" or parents being "overprotective." Something systemic has shifted. And that shift is rooted in how we approach health from birth onward.

The Immune System Is Regulated by the Nervous System

Here is the key principle that reshapes how we think about children's immunity: The immune system is not autonomous. It is regulated by the nervous system.

This field is called psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) — the study of how the brain, hormones, and immune system communicate. The science is clear: your nervous system directly controls immune function. When the nervous system is balanced, the immune system functions optimally. When the nervous system is dysregulated, the immune system becomes reactive, overactive, or sluggish.

This is the chiropractic starting point. We do not focus on the immune system itself. We focus on restoring the nervous-system regulation that allows the immune system to work.

The Autonomic Nervous System: Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Balance

The autonomic nervous system has two branches:

Sympathetic (Fight-or-Flight). This system prepares the body for stress and threat. Heart rate increases, blood pressure rises, digestion shuts down, and immune surveillance shifts into high alert. This is useful in true emergencies — but chronic sympathetic activation is inflammatory.

Parasympathetic (Rest-and-Digest). This system activates during safety and rest. Heart rate slows, blood pressure normalizes, digestion is active, and the body focuses on repair and regeneration. A healthy parasympathetic tone is anti-inflammatory and supports immune tolerance (the ability to distinguish self from non-self, and not attack the body's own cells).

Healthy immunity requires parasympathetic dominance. A child stuck in chronic sympathetic activation develops immune dysregulation — allergies, autoimmune flares, chronic inflammation.

Children today are pushed into sympathetic dominance by stress, screens, lack of outdoor time, processed foods, sleep disruption, and birth trauma that never healed. Restoring parasympathetic tone is foundational to rebuilding immune resilience.

How SOT Restores Autonomic Balance

Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT) works on the dural-tension system — the relationship between the cranium (head), spine, and sacrum (base of the spine) via the dura mater, the outermost membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

When the pelvis or sacrum is misaligned, it creates dural tension. That tension travels up the spine and affects the brainstem — the "autonomic control center" of the body. Brainstem dysregulation = autonomic dysregulation = immune dysregulation.

SOT uses gentle, low-force corrections to realign the sacrum and pelvis. This releases dural tension, allows the brainstem to recalibrate, and shifts the nervous system toward parasympathetic tone.

For a child with chronic ear infections, allergies, or immune sensitivity, SOT work often brings relief within a few weeks because it addresses the root: nervous-system dysregulation.

Additionally, SOT includes cranial work — assessing and correcting restrictions in the cranial sutures. In children, the skull bones are still mobile and respond beautifully to gentle cranial adjustments. Cranial restrictions can impair cerebrospinal-fluid flow and vagal (parasympathetic) function. Releasing them restores immune regulation.

CMRT and the Visceral-Immune Connection

CMRT (Chiropractic Manipulative Reflex Technique) is a specialized approach that identifies reflex points in the body connected to specific organs and systems.

The immune system has direct reflex points: the thymus gland (the master immune gland in young children), the spleen, and lymph tissue. CMRT allows us to stimulate these points, enhance their function, and boost immune resilience.

Additionally, CMRT addresses gut dysbiosis — imbalance in the gut microbiome. The gut is home to 70% of the immune system. When the gut microbiome is disrupted (often by antibiotics, processed foods, or stress), immune function suffers. CMRT reflex work can help restore gut signaling and support healthy dysbiosis.

The reflex connections are real, measurable, and powerful — especially in children whose bodies are still plastic and responsive.

Sources of Immune Dysregulation in Kids

Understanding where immune problems come from helps us address them:

Birth Trauma. Forceps, vacuum extraction, and tight nuchal cords create cervical and cranial restrictions that lock the child's nervous system into sympathetic dominance from day one. Early chiropractic care can release these restrictions and reset autonomic tone.

Chronic Stress. School pressure, overscheduling, parental anxiety, and social media stress push children into chronic fight-or-flight. The parasympathetic system never gets a chance to activate, so immune tolerance never develops.

Sleep Disruption. Screens before bed, inconsistent sleep schedules, and sleep apnea (often undiagnosed in children) rob the body of the parasympathetic recovery window. Poor sleep = poor immune function.

Antibiotic Overuse. While antibiotics are sometimes necessary, they devastate the gut microbiome. Each course of antibiotics kills both pathogenic and beneficial bacteria. Without the beneficial bacteria, immune tolerance fails and allergies/sensitivities develop.

Processed Foods and Gut Inflammation. Seed oils, refined sugars, and additives drive intestinal permeability ("leaky gut") and dysbiosis. A compromised gut barrier triggers immune reactivity.

Vaccine Reactions. Dr. Foss does not advise on vaccine decisions — that is a conversation between you and your pediatrician. But I can say: if a child has a vaccine reaction (fever, excessive irritability, regression in development), chiropractic care that supports autonomic regulation can help the child's body process the reaction more smoothly.

Environmental Toxins. Heavy metals, air pollution, and mold exposure dysregulate the immune system.

Building Immune Resilience: What We Do Differently

At Pura Vida, immune-support care for children looks like this:

1. Correct the Nervous-System Foundation. SOT and cranial work restore parasympathetic tone. This is the bedrock. Without it, nothing else works.

2. Support Visceral Function. CMRT reflex work enhances thymus, spleen, and lymph function. We are literally signaling the immune system to wake up and work better.

3. Partner With Pediatrician on Lifestyle. We encourage:

  • Sleep: 8–10 hours nightly, no screens 1 hour before bed, consistent bedtime
  • Outdoor time: At least 1 hour daily. Sunlight resets circadian rhythm and supports immune function. Soil exposure ("mycobiome") supports healthy immune tolerance.
  • Real food: Whole foods, minimal processing, anti-inflammatory diet
  • Play and movement: Free, unstructured physical activity reduces stress and supports parasympathetic tone
  • Minimal antibiotics: Treat infection only when necessary; allow the body to fight minor colds and infections when safe to do so

4. Avoid Immune-Disrupting Interventions When Possible. We work closely with your pediatrician. If your child can recover from an ear infection without antibiotics (some can, with close monitoring), that preserves the microbiome. We support the body's natural healing capacity.

5. Regular Check-ins. Most children with chronic immune issues benefit from monthly or every-other-month chiropractic visits as preventive care — not just acute treatment when an infection flares.

What a Pediatric Immune-Support Visit Looks Like

If you bring your child to Pura Vida for immune support, here is the visit:

  1. History and intake. We ask about allergies, infections, sleep, stress, diet, and medical history. We listen for patterns.

  2. Exam. Age-appropriate orthopedic and neurological exam. We assess spinal alignment, cranial mobility, and autonomic signs (heart-rate variability, pupil response, skin condition). We do not always take X-rays; clinical assessment is usually sufficient.

  3. Explanation. We explain what we found and why chiropractic care can help. We discuss the nervous-system-immune connection in language your child and you can understand.

  4. Treatment. For younger children (under 6), a visit might be 10–15 minutes — gentle cranial work and sacral correction. For older children, 15–20 minutes including more comprehensive spinal and visceral work.

  5. Lifestyle counseling. We offer specific, actionable suggestions for sleep, diet, and stress management tailored to your child's age and family situation.

  6. Follow-up plan. Most children with chronic immune issues see improvement in 4–6 weeks with bi-weekly or monthly care. Once improvement is established, we move to preventive monthly or every-other-month visits.

We are bilingual — English and Spanish — and serve families from Stone Oak, Castle Hills, Alamo Heights, Helotes, and across San Antonio.

Working With Your Pediatrician

I do not work in isolation. If your child comes to Pura Vida, I will assess and treat what I can address — nervous-system function, reflex stimulation, and structural balance. If I suspect something beyond my scope — such as a true systemic autoimmune condition, immunodeficiency, or infections requiring antibiotics — I will refer back to your pediatrician.

Most pediatricians recognize that a child's nervous system and immune system are connected. We have worked alongside pediatricians, family-medicine doctors, and nurse practitioners across San Antonio for 23 years, and collaboration matters.
