Dr. Foss is a San Antonio Pediatric Chiropractor who also offers services to kids as a child chiropractor. Kids love to run jump and play almost every day, seldom thinking of the future impact it could have on their lives. However, if we as adults had as much impact in our lives we would certainly be crippled fast. This is due to the high amount of “spongy bone” in kids’ bones, and as we get older this decreases over time. This fact is why kids don’t break bones as often as adults. It is also the reason why kids need chiropractic so much.
Parents are always urging their kids to “straighten up” instead of hunching over, and with good reason – having poor posture in your youth can lead to a variety of problems early on. The spine develops until somewhere around the age of 25, but in reality, most of the damage done by the time a person is 18 is very hard to fix. As a pediatric chiropractor, I sometimes get calls from parents asking whether their child is too young to receive chiropractic care, and the answer is always the same – it’s never too early to receive pediatric chiropractic care.
Bringing your child to Pura Vida Chiropractic for treatment as a new patient may be difficult at first. Some children might refuse to cooperate as they don’t understand what the treatment can do for them – they’d much rather be off somewhere else, doing something more entertaining.
When working with kids, I aim for a lighthearted approach that engages the child and makes chiropractic treatment seem less like a chore and more like something they enjoy doing. I find that even really young children warm up to the idea of treatment once I’ve had the chance to explain its benefits, as well as the risks associated with bad posture. While it’s true that subluxation hasn’t had as much time to develop in the bodies of children when compared to adults, kids can still suffer from spinal misalignments and nerve issues, especially if they’re involved in activities that deteriorate their posture. Chiropractic adjustments and chiropractic treatment may be necessary.
Some kids that visit my office for their first visit – especially younger ones – are afraid that the treatment is going to be painful or unpleasant. Here, it helps to explain that the body is being put back in place rather than being subjected to a strange treatment. Once the child understands the mechanics behind pediatric chiropractic care and what it seeks to accomplish, moving forward and intense chiropractic adjustments become easier.
As adults, we know we should remain upright and maintain our posture for our own well-being. Very few children, however, understand how important it is – to them, parents complaining about their posture can seem as if they’re just nagging. Due to a lack of knowledge and experience, some kids willingly assume a poor posture in their parent’s absence in order to spite them. This is far from the only thing putting children at risk of back pain. Modern life has made it very difficult for a child’s spine to remain upright because of all the digital entertainment that encourages posturing.
Children as young as 8 years old can be seen hunching over their smartphone for hours, bending forward in front of the computer, playing video games on deceivingly comfortable armchairs and sofas and so forth. All of these activities place a lot of stress on your child’s spine and can also cause difficulties with the nervous system when given enough time.
Even the best treatment can only do so much – there’s nothing like explaining the importance of good posture and spinal health to a child and thereby setting the course for their healthcare for the coming years. I did mention that a lighthearted approach works best when working with children, but that doesn’t mean I won’t treat them like adults – no matter if your child is 8 or 16 years old, I will explain how vital a healthy spine is in great detail. With the right approach, the lesson will stick with your child well into the adult years.
They’re called formative years for a reason – the body will tend to grow in whatever direction it’s allowed to. An upright posture will cause proper upwards development while being hunched over for hours each day can easily lead to sub-optimal growth. Your child can only do so
much, even after absorbing everything I share. If his or her body is already a victim of misalignment, chiropractic treatment is necessary to restore its full function and help reassure that the child’s future development is on course.
Chiropractic sessions at Pura Vida will energize your child and prepare them for the transition into adulthood, both physical and mental. Once harmony is restored, the youngster won’t just have an easier time performing any physical task, from writing to sports – he or she will also find it easier to concentrate and study. The benefits of chiropractic care extend far beyond revitalizing your body so that it can better handle everyday stress – just ask any of my patients who have dealt with chronic pain for years on end before finally picking up the phone and giving me a call.
