Infant Reflux and CMRT: Gentle Chiropractic Care | San Antonio TX

Infant reflux is linked to upper cervical and occipital subluxation affecting the vagus nerve. CMRT provides gentle, safe relief without medication.

Infant Reflux and CMRT: Gentle Chiropractic Care | San Antonio TX

Your newborn is spitting up constantly. They cry during or after feeds. They seem uncomfortable, arching their back. You have been told reflux in babies is normal and usually resolves on its own — but watching your baby struggle is heartbreaking.

What if there was a way to help without medication?

In 23 years of practice, I have adjusted thousands of infants and newborns with reflux, colic, and feeding difficulty. Using CMRT and gentle Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT), I have seen babies go from struggling to feed to nursing comfortably and sleeping peacefully — often within just a few visits.

The reason: infant reflux is not always a stomach problem. It is a nervous system problem, rooted in how your baby's birth affected their upper spine and vagus nerve.

Let me explain how this works, and why gentle chiropractic care might be exactly what your baby needs.

Birth Trauma and the Infant Spine

Here is what nobody tells new parents: birth — even a normal vaginal birth — puts tremendous mechanical stress on your baby's spine.

During labor:

  • The baby is compressed and twisted as they navigate the birth canal
  • Their head is pulled and rotated with each contraction
  • The cord may wrap around their neck, creating tension
  • Instruments (forceps, vacuum) apply direct pressure to the skull and upper spine

Even after a smooth birth, your baby's spine is not in perfect alignment. The upper cervical spine (C1-C3) and occiput (where the skull meets the spine) often have subluxations.

These tiny misalignments have big consequences: they affect the vagus nerve.

The Vagus Nerve and Infant Reflux

The vagus nerve is the main control line from your baby's brain to their digestive system. It controls:

  • Swallowing
  • Stomach acid production
  • Esophageal valve closure (preventing reflux)
  • Stomach muscle contractions
  • The relaxation reflex during feeding

When your baby's occiput or upper cervical spine is subluxated, the vagus nerve gets irritated. An irritated vagus nerve cannot send proper signals to the digestive system.

Result: your baby:

  • Cannot coordinate swallowing and breathing
  • Has weak esophageal valve closure (allowing reflux)
  • Cannot relax during feeding (tension creates regurgitation)
  • Has uncoordinated stomach contractions
  • Sometimes develops tongue-tie appearance or latching difficulty (neurological, not anatomical)

This is why so many "reflux babies" are otherwise healthy. The problem is not the stomach. It is the nerve supply to the stomach.

Why Medication Does Not Solve Infant Reflux

Most doctors prescribe H2 blockers or PPIs for infant reflux. These drugs reduce stomach acid, which temporarily reduces the burn of reflux.

But here is the problem: babies NEED stomach acid. It is essential for:

  • Breaking down milk proteins
  • Absorbing iron and calcium
  • Killing bad bacteria
  • Triggering digestive enzymes in the small intestine

Suppressing stomach acid in babies can lead to:

  • Poor nutrient absorption
  • Increased infections
  • Digestive dysfunction that lasts years
  • Dependency on medication

CMRT does not suppress acid. It restores the vagus nerve so the esophageal valve works properly. The reflux stops because the stomach acid stays where it belongs: in the stomach.

The CMRT Infant Reflux Protocol

When parents bring a reflux baby to my office, here is what I assess:

  1. Birth history: Was there a long labor, forceps, vacuum, cord wrap, or c-section? These all affect the spine differently.
  2. Feeding assessment: Can the baby latch? Do they arch during feeds? Spit up after every feed or only sometimes?
  3. Upper cervical exam: Gentle palpation of C1-C3 and the occiput to look for subluxation
  4. Neurological testing: Reflex testing to assess vagal function

Then I apply the CMRT infant reflux protocol:

  • Occipital release: Extremely gentle, light-touch work at the base of the skull where the vagus nerve originates
  • Upper cervical adjustments: Low-force, specific adjustments using SOT techniques adapted for newborns
  • Vagal nerve activation: Gentle techniques to wake up the vagus nerve and restore tone
  • Feeding support: If latching is an issue, I assess for tongue-tie (anatomical) vs. tongue dysfunction (neurological)

Most babies show improvement within 1-2 visits. By visit 4-6, many are feeding comfortably and reflux has significantly decreased or resolved.

What to Expect: Safety and Comfort

Parents often worry: "Is it safe to adjust a newborn?"

Yes — when done by a chiropractor trained in infant care. I have been adjusting newborns and infants for 23 years. The techniques are incredibly gentle — the force used is no more than the pressure you would use to test a ripe peach.

Your baby does not cry or feel pain. In fact, many babies fall asleep during adjustments because the care is so relaxing.

CMRT for Colic and Sleep Issues

Infant reflux often comes with colic and poor sleep. The same vagal and upper cervical dysfunction that causes reflux also creates:

  • Excessive crying and irritability
  • Inability to settle or sleep
  • Tension and stiffness in the neck
  • Poor bowel movement coordination

CMRT addresses all of these. As the vagus nerve is restored and upper cervical subluxations are corrected, babies typically become calmer, sleep better, and cry less.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old does my baby have to be to see a chiropractor? I can safely adjust newborns from birth. Many parents bring babies in within the first week for a post-birth check.

Will adjustments hurt my baby? No. The techniques are incredibly gentle — lighter than a massage. Your baby will not cry from the adjustment itself (though they might cry if they are already fussy from reflux).

How many visits will my baby need? Most babies show significant improvement within 4-6 visits. Some improve in 1-2 visits. Occasionally babies with severe or long-standing reflux need 8-10 visits.

Can I still breastfeed while my baby receives chiropractic care? Absolutely. Chiropractic care often improves breastfeeding because it restores proper swallowing and latch mechanics.

What if my baby was born via C-section? Does reflux still happen? Yes. C-section babies sometimes have different spinal patterns than vaginal births, but reflux can still result from upper cervical dysfunction. CMRT helps C-section babies too.

Is chiropractic an alternative to my pediatrician? No. Chiropractic care complements pediatric care. I work alongside pediatricians and will refer your baby back to your doctor if anything concerns me. You should always have a pediatrician you trust.
